Fly Fishing in South Central Pennsylvania

The camp is located in the heart of the Cumberland Valley, which lays upon nutrient-rich limestone.  Spring creeks thrive in these fantastic but fragile ecosystems.  For decades anglers have travelled from all over the world to challenge the wily trout that live in these beautiful and important resources, and to experience a region filled with fly fishing history.

Yellow Breeches Creek

Flowing for nearly 50 miles through farmlands, housing developments, and urban areas, the Yellow Breeches is a major watershed in the area.  However, the mile of catch-and-release water downstream of the town of Boiling Springs receives the most attention.  On this stretch, where the Allenberry Resort is located, anglers can experience excellent fly fishing due to heavy insect hatches and large populations of fish.

Letort Spring Run

Meandering through downtown Carlisle is one of the most storied waters in all of fly fishing.  On the Letort, local anglers such as Vince Marinaro and Charlie Fox developed fly patterns and angling techniques that changed the face of the sport.  Although a shadow of it’s former self from years of harmful agriculture, development, and pollution, the Letort can still produce large brown trout for the angler with some patience and skill.

Big Spring Creek

Another creek that has had some hard times, but is on the rebound is Big Spring.  Rising up from one of the largest spring sources in the east coast, the once fabled brook trout creek is seeing a resurgence that can be attributed to cooperative efforts from local conservation-minded groups.  Today rainbows, browns, and some brook trout can be found throughout much of the stream.

Falling Spring Branch

The southernmost major spring creek of the valley is also an impressive example of stream restoration, landowner cooperation, and trout management.  A premier wild rainbow trout fishery, the Falling Spring flows through the town of Chambersburg in Franklin County.  Regular hatches, miles of access, and the possibility of taking a nice trout make this spring creek a can’t miss for the angler wishing to see what the area has to offer.
